Experiencing God’s Presence in Everyday Life
Today I want to talk about experiencing God’s presence in everyday life.
I recently spoke with a friend who shared that she was feeling disconnected from God. She told me she was frustrated with her weekly Bible study group and felt like quitting. Then she said, “I just want to crawl into bed and stay there.”
I hugged her and told her I understood. I’ve been there too.
Many people struggle during the winter months. Seasonal Affective Disorder is very real, and as a nurse I can offer many clinical strategies to help. But clinical care does not always address the spiritual side of this struggle.
If you are feeling this way, or know someone who is, this message is for you.
Can we truly encounter God outside of church services, groups, and rituals?
My answer is yes.
Jeremiah 33:3 reminds us:
“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.”
One of the questions I try to ask myself is:
“How is God present today?”
God is present in every moment. He is waiting for us to notice Him, to reach out to Him, and to walk with Him through the power of His Spirit.
God does not manifest Himself physically before us, yet when I go outside and hike, I know He is with me. I feel His presence through creation, through the stillness, and through the quiet voice of the Holy Spirit speaking in my heart.
Each morning when I awaken, I try to acknowledge the presence of the Holy Spirit and invite Him to walk with me during the day. I ask for His guidance in prayer, and then I listen — through my thoughts, my conscience, and what I know to be right.
I know it can be hard to push through the heaviness of the season. One of my biggest suggestions is journaling.
Many people feel intimidated by journaling or feel they don’t have the time. But it doesn’t have to be complicated. Keep a small notepad and simply write down moments of beauty:
the sunrise, the trees, the snow, a starry sky.
These are not small things. They are reminders of God’s divine handiwork.
We also often forget the gifts God has given us — our senses, our ability to move, to hear, to see, to feel, to work, to create, to provide.
Yes, we may work for our food and shelter, but God gave us the strength, the intellect, and the opportunity to do so.
Journaling is not about writing long daily entries. It can be as simple as noting moments where you recognize God’s presence.
Some of my favorite reminders of God’s presence come through human connection. When a friend hugs me, when someone shows kindness, when love is extended — I know that is of God.
“God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” — 1 John 4:16
Human connection allows us to share empathy, laughter, tears, and support. It reminds us that we matter.
Have you ever tried finding mindfulness in the mundane?
Slow down. Notice the small things. The scent of a flower. The warmth of a bath. The taste of food. The sunlight through your window.
Practice gratitude. View each day as a gift.
Another powerful way to connect with God is through serving others. Caring for those in need is a service to God, to society, and to ourselves. Whether volunteering, checking on a neighbor, or offering compassion to someone who is hurting — these acts reflect God’s love.
I would love to hear your experiences of God’s presence in your life. Please share in the comments how you recognize His presence and how you stay connected to our Triune God.
You are not alone.
God is nearer than you think.
Dear Heavenly Father,
We praise You for Your love despite our sinfulness. During our times of feeling disconnected, may we find connection with you through observation, friendships and outreach. Thank you for your constant presence in our lives. May we continue to grow and serve You. In Your holy name, Amen
